Join us at the American College of Sports Medicine 62nd Annual Meeting! We are excited to be part of this event which takes place from May 27 to May 29th in San Diego, California. For more information on the Annual Meeting, please visit http://acsm.org/.

For those of you who might not be familiar with ACSM, the American College of Sports Medicine is a large sports medicine and exercise science organization founded in 1954. ACSM promotes and combines scientific research, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to preserve and improve physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life. In 2007 ACSM started the Exercise is Medicine® initiative to help include exercise into rehabilitation and treatment programs.

Members represent more than 70 disciplines in sports medicine and exercise science. ACSM has a wide range of medical specialties, allied health professions, and scientific discipline. Members are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports-related injuries and the advancement of the science of exercise. A lot is happening at our booth. You won’t want to miss our presentation on how PowerLung fits into Exercise is Medicine.

Many clinical trials have found benefits of respiratory muscle training on sports performance in rowers, cyclists and swimmers. Additional studies and clinical trials have also tested the effects of Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) on asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, pre- and post-surgery, chronic heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, ventilator weaning, and neuromuscular diseases.

Most of these studies have demonstrated:

  • A reduction in dyspnea during exercise in athletes or rehabilitation or light exercise in patients
  • increase in the force of respiratory muscles during intensive exercise training for athletes
  • increased endurance in patients with improvements in some lung function parameters
  • reduction in medication and improvement in quality of life in sufferers of chronic diseases

Dr. Mitch Lomax will be presenting her research entitled “The Efficacy of Respiratory Muscle Training in Raising the Threshold: A Pilot Study” on May 28th in the poster presentations

Join PowerLung on Thursday, May 28 from 11:30-11:45 a.m. at booth 645 to learn how Improving Breathing Fitness Can Improve Training and Wellness Outcomes.

On May 29, Dr. Andrew Scott will present his poster “The Effect of Different Respiratory Muscle Training Protocols on Health Outcomes in Patients with COPD.” When you have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, breathing is no little matter. This serious lung disease includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

PowerLung is pleased to also be participating as one of the many sponsors of the Student Bowl. Be sure to make that event a priority as it is always interesting and a great way to test your own knowledge.

We are in Booth #645 and would love to chat with you. Come meet and talk with our CEO Carolyn Morse.
